Who Are The Favourite Bands of China’s Youth?

Bands China Youth Like

BBC Radio 4 correspondent, Rajan Datar, went to a recent gig at one of Beijing’s major live houses and asked a handful of Chinese youth to name their favourite bands. Their responses were varying combinations of the acts listed below.

Oasis, Joy Division, Lady Gaga, Rolling Stones, Ting Tings, Tom Waits, Blur, Johnny Thunders, Ramones, Smashing Pumpkins, Suede, Radiohead, The Doors, Iggy Pop, Sex Pistols.

There’s a distinct penchant for punk running through China. But something that stands out for me is that there seems to be little shame in declaring love for bands like The Ting Tings and Joy Division, in the same breath. It’s a dangerous generalisation, but a noticable cultural difference between China and ‘the west’.

NB: Not surprisingly Lady Gaga has become the first artist to have her music videos watched over 1 billion times online. She’s not only got the ear of youth in China, netizens are incorporating her name into everyday speech.
